Angles on paper

A protractor measures the opening between two rays. Classifying without measuring builds intuition: acute is less than 90°, right is exactly 90°, obtuse is between 90° and 180°. Mixing all three on one sheet keeps students from assuming every angle is acute — a common bias when diagrams are always drawn small.

Teaching tips

  • For measure mode, print at 100% scale so a real protractor matches the diagram (check one printed ray length with a ruler once per printer).
  • Have students estimate first, then measure — compare estimate to protractor reading to build error sense.
  • Link to comparison symbols when you order angles by measure without drawing them.

After angles, move to fractions and shapes for area, or coordinate plotting when you introduce graphs. For number sense with operations, pair with number line worksheets.
